The appearance of the Lithops is a far cry from what you would normally associate with a plant. With names such as ‘The Living Stone’ and ‘Pebble Plants’, these deceptive plants look almost identical to stones, allowing them to protect themselves by camouflaging with their surroundings.
Coming from the harsh, arid regions of Southern Africa, there are at least 37 known species and more than 145 varieties of Lithops. From pink, to bright orange and even green, these plants come in all shapes and sizes. They are also extremely drought tolerant, needing very little care, almost begging to be ignored. These living stones will definitely make an interesting and endearing addition to your garden!
Here are some pointers on how to care for the Lithops!
- Keep in porous soil
- Put under direct sunlight
- Water only when plant appears wrinkly (2-3 weeks typically)
